THE IWASHITA RESIDENCE
in SANTA BARBARA
This comprehensive renovation and addition transforms a modest 1,600-square-foot ranch house into a 3,400-square-foot multi-generational Spanish Colonial estate. The project reimagines both the use of the site and the aesthetic expression of the architecture, replacing generic suburban character with authentic, historically-inspired Santa Barbara charm. Textured stucco walls, clay tile roofing, and carefully proportioned openings create the gracious restraint characteristic of California's Spanish Colonial tradition.
The design emphasizes indoor-outdoor living through intimate courtyards, covered loggias, and generous openings that blur the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. Multiple outdoor rooms—entry courts, dining terraces, and sheltered patios—extend the living area while creating private microclimates suited to Santa Barbara's Mediterranean climate. Scheduled for completion in 2026, the residence demonstrates how thoughtful renovation can honor regional architectural heritage while meeting the practical needs of contemporary family life across multiple generations.
