A FAMILY ESTATE
in STEAMBOAT SPRINGS
This 8,500-square-foot mountain estate in Steamboat Springs represents a careful synthesis of Colorado's vernacular wood cabin tradition with a modern, almost Prairie-style aesthetic. The design honors the rustic character of historic mountain architecture—heavy timber construction, deep overhangs, and natural materials—while embracing the horizontal lines, geometric clarity, and open planning characteristic of early 20th-century American modernism. The result is a residence that feels both rooted in place and progressively contemporary.
Organized around intimate courtyards and terraces, the estate steps gracefully into its mountainside setting. Expansive glass walls frame views of the surrounding landscape, while broad roof planes and carefully articulated timber structure create shelter and shadow. Stone foundations anchor the building to the earth as wooden volumes rise above, their clean lines and measured proportions creating a dialogue between Colorado's building heritage and a more refined, timeless architectural expression.
